Thamesmead Tournament

We, as a school, have been lucky enough to have football coaching from Mr Harrington, a teacher at St Pauls.  As football is so popular at St Thomas a Becket, Mr Harrington comes to our school twice a week on a Monday and Thursday from 3.20pm to 4.30pm where we do multi skills, fitness and endurance, rounded off by a small sided football match.

From this Mr Harrington had the very difficult task of selecting 10 players to represent our school in The Thamesmead Tournament.  It was an arduous task as all players were of an excellent quality with much talent on offer.  So, whilst Mr Harrington would have loved to select all the trialists to play, he narrowed his selection to :

Goalkeeper : Tomasz

Centre Back : CJ, Louis and Tolana

Centre Midfield : Buddy and Jolomi

Centre Attacking Midfield : Anthony and Ezequiel

Striker : Donald and Ufuoma

There were schools from both Greenwich and Bexley borough participating in this prestigious cup and due to previous victories, we went into the competition as favourites to win.  It was a quite a weight on our shoulders, but we managed to rise to the occasion.  We drew one game and won the others without conceding one goal  to be the proud winners of The Thamesmead Tournament.   All boys not only played to a very high standard, but throughout the competition showed impeccable sportsmanship.

A special mention must go to our goalkeeper, Tomasz (safe hands), Donald (super striker) and Grace (Yr1L), our chief supporter.

Tag Rugby

On Tuesday 22nd March, seven Yr6 pupils travelled to St Pauls to take part in a Tag Rugby competition against 5 other local schools.  We had only had one masterclass in the sport before we were invited to enter the competition, but enter we did !!

The first match was played tentatively and we were rightly penalised for infringements such as `knock ons'.  Despite losing, we still managed to secure points and entered into the next game with more confidence.

The second game was played with much more gusto and knowledge.  We spread our field wider, using the wings to our advantage and were happy to come away from the match with a much deserved win.

We were buoyed up going into our third and final match as we knew we had a chance of going through to the final.  We played extremely well, closing down the opposition while opening up ourselves to spread the play.  At this stage in the competition, we really understood the `no passing back' rule, and as such were not being penalised for it.

It was end to end drama, with inspired play from both sides resulting in a draw. However, we were told that we would not be progressing to the final due to a points difference.  It was disappointing, but at the same time we had managed to come third in a game which was relatively new to us.

As the sun was shining bright, we watched the final, which was won by Our lady of Grace - the reigning champions three times over.

Well Done to all the team - Tolana, Olivia, Atemji, Anthony, Donald, Rian and Derron

Our Year 5 and 6 Basketball team travelled to St Paul's Academy for an inter school competition. We have travelled this road before, reaching third place last year. Competition was fierce and although we cruised through to the finals, we were held at deadlock against Our Lady of Grace in the actual final. We then played a minute each way for the decider. At ten seconds to the final whistle, Nathaniel shoots, and... Scores, hailing us Champions!

Well Done boys on your well deserved win. Great competitive spirit without compromising sportsmanship.

Year 5 and 6 girls took part in the Basketball competition on the 8th March 2016 at St Paul's Academy. It was a fast tempo competition with St Thomas a Becket playing five games in a row. We won 3, lost 2 and drew one which placed us in well deserved bronze place.

The girls played with gusto, determination and sportsmanship. They were a credit to St Thomas a Becket.

With special thanks to:

Mrs Harris and Ms Smith.
